Diving Island of Giannutri
Giannutri is the southernmost island of the Tuscan Archipelago and is located about 10 miles from Porto Ercole.
The original name of the island derives from its crescent shape: the crescent moon identifies the goddess Artemis, or Diana in Greek mythology: the first denominations of the island are in fact Artemisia or Dianium. The name then changed to become today’s Giannutri.
The island is a protected natural area, both on land and at sea, which is located within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and is famous for its beauty and the transparency of the water, as well as for the walls they descend vertically to abyssal depths.

- And if instead you love depth and exploration, don’t miss the wrecks of the Anna Bianca and the Nasim II
The pearls of the Tyrrhenian Sea
An ancient legend tells that the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago were born when the Goddess Venus emerged from the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and, in her haste to reach the shore, broke her precious pearl necklace: seven of them came back to the surface and turned into beautiful islands that now form the Tuscan Archipelago.
Giglio and Giannutri are two of the magnificent pearls of the Tyrrhenian Sea, an extraordinary mosaic of strictly protected natural sceneries. In 1996 the Tuscan Archipelago National Park was born, under the sign of the protection and safeguarding of the environment.
The stretch of sea between Monte Argentario and the islands of Giglio and Giannutri is also part of another protected marine area: the Cetacean Sanctuary: thanks to the abundance of plankton and pelagic life, this marine reserve is visited by an extraordinary variety of marine mammals that arrive to feed: fin whales and striped dolphins, sperm whales, pilot whales, Risso’s dolphins and bottlenose dolphins.
